Best Basic Sex Positions

May 8 / James Walther, MA, ABS
One of the most common areas that I address with new sex coaching clients is positions. Not all positions work for all clients. For example, I have had a client with partial paralysis who could only use one position, so in their case I just taught them how to use it more effectively. But most of my clients benefit from having 2-4 go-to positions. Here are some of the best ones.

Techniques 101 - Part 1

One of the most common areas that I address with new sex coaching clients is positions. Not all positions work for all clients. For example, I have had a client with partial paralysis who could only use one position, so in their case I just taught them how to use it more effectively. But most of my clients benefit from having 2-4 go-to positions.

When it comes to positions, my favorite resource to teaching clients is ChristianFriendlySexPositions.com. The owners have graciously allowed me to use their images for my instructional purposes. The great thing about their site is that they use stick figures to illustrate different positions and they now have over 300 positions. They also have fun things like their Position of the Week Newsletter. Go check them out!

But 300 positions can be a bit daunting. So let’s break it down. For starters, there are three basic types of positions: man-on-top, woman-on-top, and man-from-behind positions. We can expand on these to add: kneeling, seated, side-by-side, spooning, and standing positions.

Most couples are familiar with three: missionary, doggy, and cowgirl, but things could be better. So here are the alternatives I have found to be the most effective in making things more enjoyable for both.

Missionary

This is one of the basic and universally used positions, but it can be difficult for the husband to maintain a steady rhythm.

Indrani

By moving his knees up, the husband will have greater control for thrusting. Bonus: add a pillow under the wife’s pelvis to improve the angle of entry for g-spot stimulation.

Butterfly

This can be a good alternative to missionary for pregnant women.

Doggy

This is another classic. For novice husbands, this is a great position to practice finding and maintaining an enjoyable rhythm, especially when using a love strap. For pregnant wives, this position may be much more comfortable than missionary.

Turtle

The wife can improve g-spot stimulation by dropping her breasts to the bed which changes the angle of entry.

Beep Beep

This is another great alternative to doggy, which can allow for especially powerful thrusting.

Cowgirl

Many couples find woman-on-top positions to be a fun mix-up. This allows the wife to take the lead and her husband to lay back and enjoy. Some pregnant women also find this to be a position that they can handle.

Locked Cowgirl

By changing the husband’s leg position, he can help increase the penetration depth and angle.
